About St James Church

St James Church is part of the Anglican (Church of England) Parish of Benwell and Scotswood. This is a Team Parish with four different churches serving the people of the West End of Newcastle, south of the West Road from Scotswood to Elswick.  You can find our Team website at http://www.benwellscotswoodteam.co.uk

The other churches in the Team are The Venerable Bede [www.venbedechurch.org.uk], St John the Baptist in Benwell Village and St Margaret’s at Scotswood.  As a team we work together to proclaim the Good News about Jesus and seek to grow in faith and love.

If you are looking for a perfect church or even a mega church, then you have come to the wrong place. If you are looking for a church of ordinary people discovering the extraordinary reality of God’s Love, then this could be for you. We aim to be welcoming and inclusive, taking inspiration from Jesus who calls us as we are to journey with Him, and one another, to become all that we can be.

Church Worship

Our main morning service is on Sunday at 10am. During the service we share bread and wine to remember Jesus as he asked his followers to do.  We usually have a Sunday school, though we have about 6 Sundays in the year which are All Age, and the children stay in the service.  We are an inclusive, friendly and welcoming congregation and would love you to join us.  We have a lively music group as well as an organ and sing both modern and traditional songs and hymns.  The message is based on the Bible reading for the day and relates to our everyday lives. This service is followed by coffee in the hall with a chance to meet our congregation.

If Sunday is not a good day for you, or you prefer a quieter service, we have smaller Communion Service on Thursdays at 9.30am. It takes about half an hour as there are no hymns, but there is usually a short address. This service is followed by coffee. There is also a quiet service of Holy Communion on  the first Sunday of each month at 8am.

Home Communion

If you live in the parish and are unable to get to church due to age, disability or illness, we are delighted to offer you communion monthly in your home. Please use the contact form below to arrange this.

Bible Study

We have 2 Bible study groups at St James one on a Monday evening and one on a Tuesday morning before Lunch Break, and both attract a mixture of people from across the team. The Monday Bible study concentrates on a particular book from the Bible; the Tuesday study focuses on Daily Bread, our Bible reading notes.  Bible Study Groups are a great way to explore the Christian faith and discover peoples experiences in a non-threatening setting.  We usually study something different during Advent and Lent.
